Dr Jenner’s House, Museum and Garden has a thriving volunteer programme and we are always looking for enthusiastic people who would like to contribute their time to help us preserve and share the amazing story of Dr Jenner. Our talented volunteer team were South West regional winners of the prestigious Marsh Volunteer Awards 2016.

Volunteering at the museum is rewarding in many ways – fascinating, fun, meeting new people, making new friends, learning new skills, and it’s simply gratifying to see visitors become aware of the significance of Edward Jenner’s work, vaccination and the eventual eradication of smallpox.

(Lynda, Learning Volunteer)

We have volunteers in a variety of roles including front of house, archiving and conservation, gardening, social media and admin. Volunteering with us is flexible and we offer regular or occasional roles. To say thank you for giving up your time, we can offer you an exciting range of outings and social events, training opportunities, shop discount and free entry to the museum’s programme of talks and events.

You can find out more about our current roles below. If you have any questions about volunteering with us, or would like any further information, please contact the Museum Office on info@edwardjenner.co.uk or 01453 810631.

Current opportunities

Welcome Volunteer

Assist in the day-to-day running of the museum and provide our visitors with an excellent visitor experience. The role includes providing a warm welcome for all visitors, selling tickets and shop items, answering queries, helping visitors to interpret the museum’s displays and ensuring they have a comfortable, interesting and enjoyable visit.

I really enjoy the challenge of volunteering at Dr Jenner’s House, as well as the company of the other volunteers and the social events programme. There is ample opportunity to learn about current issues in immunology, as well as historical ones and to share them with our interesting visitors.

Learning Volunteer

Our learning volunteers help to inspire lifelong learning through the museum’s education programme. You could find yourself assisting with school workshops, leading tours, welcoming school groups, helping with family activities and event days. There is also the opportunity to help with creating workshops and resources, and develop promotion of our education offer.

I volunteered to help at Dr Jenner’s House because I find Edward Jenner fascinating, and I love history. I also like working with children so I enjoy helping with school visits. Each time I spend time at the museum I learn something new and interesting and meet people from far and wide who call in to visit for many different reasons.

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our collections team to help with all aspects of collection and archival management such as conservation, processing, preservation and reference. Volunteers assist with cataloguing, research, maintaining pest traps, conservation cleaning, data entry, preparing material for preservation work and filing.

I enjoy being able to sort out and study interesting papers, books and objects about Jenner and vaccination, and working with friendly colleagues.

Garden Volunteer

Become a part of our garden team and help with the day-to-day upkeep of the museum’s stunning gardens and grounds. Get involved in general maintenance like weeding, pruning and planting, help care for our historic vines, or design new beds. Previous experience in gardening is always helpful, but if you have the enthusiasm – we can provide the training.

I joined the Garden Team because I love gardening, and as I was retired had time on my hands. It is very satisfying helping to restore this beautiful garden, which is part of such an important historical property. I enjoy being able to exchange ideas with other team members and make plans for the future when we are in together.
