Job Vacancy: Visitor Services Officer

Location: Dr Jenner’s House, Museum and Garden, Church Lane, Berkeley, GL13 9BN

Salary: £18,000 per annum (full time, fixed term contract to 31 March 2018)

Closing date: 28 June 2017 (9am)

Interview date: 3/6 July 2017

Start: Immediate

Overview and background

Dr Jenner’s House, Museum & Garden is situated in the historic market town of Berkeley, at The Chantry, a striking Grade II* listed house where Edward Jenner lived for 38 years until his death in 1823. This is the house from which he pioneered vaccination against smallpox and it is now a museum celebrating his life and legacy. The museum is operated by The Jenner Trust with a small staff and team of volunteers.

We are seeking to appoint a Visitor Services Officer who will be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of visitor-facing operations at Dr Jenner’s House, Museum and Garden. If you are passionate about providing a warm welcome and bringing stories to life then this could be the role for you. You will work closely with the Museum Manager and our volunteers to ensure that we deliver an excellent experience by supporting the front of house team, ensuring that high standards of presentation are maintained and coordinating our events programme. You will also assist with marketing the museum and finding new ways to maximise our fundraising and income-generating potential.

To be successful in this role you will need to be highly motivated, organised and an excellent communicator. Whilst experience of working in a similar museum or heritage site is preferred, it is by no means essential; what is most important is that you have a passion for delivering a great service.

This is a full-time 35 hour per week post based on a Sunday to Thursday week during the museum’s open season (April to September), reverting to Monday to Friday during the closed season. This will be a fixed term contract until 31 March 2018, although there is the possibility that this could be extended. Due to limited public transport provision in Berkeley, we anticipate that the post holder will require a full driving licence and access to their own vehicle.
