Museum Fundamentals grant delivers step-change in collections care at Dr Jenner’s House
We’re pleased to share the completion of Re-Jenner-ation of the Collection — a Museum Fundamentals project focused on practical improvements to how we care for, manage, and share our collections at Dr Jenner’s House & Garden. Over the course of the project we have been able to make a set of high-impact improvements that strengthen both the day-to-day care of the collection and our ability to plan for the future.
This includes improved light management (reducing risk to sensitive objects and furnishings), upgraded showcase lighting to improve safety and visibility, and new materials/equipment to support consistent collections work.
A key part of the project has been people and skills. We have been able to invest in specialist, conservator-led input and training, supporting staff and our volunteer team to develop confidence and consistent practice in collections care and documentation. This has already strengthened our approach to collections accountability and is helping us build momentum towards a more structured collections review.
Legacy and what comes next:
The long-term legacy of this project is capacity: better conditions for the collection, stronger documentation practice, and a more confident team equipped to continue the next stage of review and access work. These foundations will support future research, interpretation, and the responsible use of the collection in displays and public engagement.
We’re very grateful to the Association of Independent Museums for the support that has enabled this vital work.
