Learning at Dr Jenner’s House
Bring the science and history alive with a visit to the home of the ‘Father of Vaccination’ Dr Edward Jenner and the site of the World’s First Vaccination Clinic.
We offer all levels of educational visits, from KS1 up to university and beyond, as well as catering for other youth and adult groups.
Many groups choose an unsupported visit, taking in the house and garden at their own pace, with our knowledgeable volunteers on hand to answer any questions. To complement the displays of objects relating to Edward Jenner and the history of vaccination, we can provide worksheets and trails suitable for a variety of ages.
To enhance your visit we have a range of workshops which can be booked on request. These can run in rotation with self-led garden and house trails. We will be expanding our workshop offer so do check back!

Workshops available from KS 1 - 4
All workshops are linked to the National Curriculum, with hands on exploration and creative discovery.
KS1 - Create a Cure
Learn about 18th medicine and compare historical practices with modern day medicine. The children will explore the Physic Garden and take part in a practical workshop to create their own ‘cures’ and marketing material for their newly created product.
KS2-4 - Create a Vaccine
An interactive, hands on workshop which takes children through the journey of designing, creating, testing and administering a new vaccine. This workshop has been designed in partnership with the Pandemic Science Institute at University of Oxford to give a real world insight into the processes behind creating a new vaccine.
KS4 - The Great Debate
This workshop offers students the opportunity to explore vaccine hesitancy. Students are given a point of view to consider and sent on a fact finding tour of the museum. A mini debating society workshop follows for each side to argue the case for their designated argument.
Talks
A range of talks are available for groups and for older students studying immunology or medicine. Topics include ‘Angel of Death: The story of Smallpox’, ‘Vaccination: Blessing or Curse’ and ‘The Life and Times of Edward Jenner’. Our speakers include former a medical microbiologist and a professor of medicine
